0020. BIGdumbFACE – Duke Lion Fights The Terror!! [2001]

Dukelionfightstheterror2

This one is a must for my list.  Not just because it’s fucking hilarious, but because it also rocks!  It’s got hilarious lyrics, brutal metal riffs and a 19-minute-long track of random noises.  What’s not to love?!  This album is a side project from Limp Bizkit’s Wes Borland.  Have you ever wondered what it would be like if he got out of Limp Bizkit and into a band with similarly crazy motherfuckers?  Yeah, that’s this.

Particularly notable tracks on this are Burgalveist, Robot, Blood Red Head On Fire and It’s Right In Here.  The last of which cracks me up every time I listen to it.  I remember reading a short interview with Wes Borland about this album, and the interviewer told him he’d listened to that track all the way through.  Wes Borland said, “Holy shit, man.  I feel like I should give you a trophy.  My own wife won’t listen to it.”  Anyway, you’re sure to enjoy this one if you’re a demented, psychotic weirdo like me.  🙂  Be sure to click the picture above to hear the entire album over at my podcast site.

Music and lyrics

The musical style of Big Dumb Face was influenced by Ween and Mr. Bungle.[3] Wes Borland stated that the band’s music is “really silly and idiotic and bizarre. […] It’s nothing but stupid […] just all these retarded songs.”[3]

Reception

Allmusic writer Kieran McCarthy described Duke Lion Fights the Terroras “a mediocre Ween rip-off.”[1]Rolling Stone wrote, “Wes Borland has picked up Ween’s affectations (pitch-altered vocals with wacky accents, ultra-chintzy synth beats)…for genre mocking….working up a functional head of silliness a few times.” CMJ called the album “A sick marriage of over-the-top death metal and Ween-y pop….it’s an absolutely ridiculous record, chock full of pitch-shifted voices and ludicrous lyrics.” Entertainment Weekly said, “Dumb? Check. Big? Not likely. But at least Duke Lion Fights the Terror isn’t only about the nookie.”[2]
